Demetrio "Jimmy" Papadimitriu, former Minister of the Presidency in the first three years of the government of Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014), presented documents to prosecutors today that he says proves that Martinelli ordered questionable purchases made by the National Assistance Program (PAN).
Papadimitriu went to the offices of prosecutor's today because he was the subject of a complaint filed by Sidney Sitton, Martinelli's lawyer, for unjustified enrichment and falsification of documents.
On his departure, the ex-minister told reporters that he submitted a letter from Martinelli telling him to "organize everything for me to sign to send to (former PAN Director) Giacomo Tamburrelli."
"Not only do I have this letter, I also have the agendas of the different boards of directors which has the signature of Mr. Ricardo Martinelli, so I have to say that Martinelli knew exactly what was going on in each of the ministries," Papadimitriu remarked.
In the specific case of the purchase of $45 million in dehydrated food that was distributed to schools, Tamburrelli has said Martinelli ordered him to make the purchase.
"Martinelli knew exactly what was happening in the PAN," said Papadimitriu.
He also said that Martinelli, through his attorney, has tried to attack him because he supported Juan Carlos Varela for president.
Martinelli is being investigated by the Supreme Court for his involvement in the PAN scandal. The former president left the country more than a month ago and it is not known when, or if, he will return.
"He doesn't want to come to Panama, he is hiding in Miami," Papadimitriu said. "He doesn't dare show his face here."
Jimmy's got an axe to grind after getting canned for being caught while scoring a choice piece of land. Honestly, these guys were stealing every which way but loose. I still think they have only uncovered small stuff so far. President Varela gets to preside over the Cumbre de las Americas with his nation mired in scandal.
