Rodny Direct Boquete Hotline

Rodny Direct Boquete Hotline

August 2, 2015

To my friends and residents of Boquete,
A month ago, I made the decision not to renew my Alto al Crimen independent contractor agreement when it expires on February 4, 2016, though until then I plan to fulfill my hotline service obligations under my contract with AAC.
However, the current possible security breach involving your personal data demands that I move forward earlier than I had planned. Thanks to the support of a seasoned group of technical, financial, and legal backers from Boquete and beyond, I am able to do what is best for the community of Boquete - starting today.
With great pride, I am announcing the opening of - my own business! - the Rodny Direct Boquete Hotline subscription service - completely under my supervision and control, without any intermediary organizations.
My new service offers you professional secure online database technology, which has proven successful in the other communities I serve, such as  Volcan and Coronado. Your private information, which only you can modify, lives in the cloud, protected by your own personal password.
I will never let your personal information reside on an insecure personal computer.
This is important to you because on July 20, 2015 I was informed that Lee Zeltzer’s laptop had been stolen - I have reason to believe it may have contained a copy of the Boquete resident database in an easily readable spreadsheet which has been used since the board of AAC cancelled my secure web-based database system early in 2014.
I believe that it is my ethical responsibility to report this possible breach of security to you, the citizens of Boquete.
In my professional judgement, this situation demands an immediate re-start with a totally new database that is secure for all Boquete citizens who wish to be my clients.
For your protection, as part of my service you will be provided an attractive plaque with your new house number.
My Rodny Direct Boquete Hotline services are ready, my website is built, and I invite you to subscribe for $80 per household per year — every penny of which goes directly to support my business, without any intermediary organization taking a cut.
I will appreciate your support by becoming a Rodny Direct Boquete Hotline subscriber.
For further information and registration, please visit my new web site at
Email me any time at rodny@rodnydirect.com
My heartfelt thanks to all of the kind and generous AAC donors for your support and trust.
Rodny
PS - I have already ordered 50 boat horns and they will be in town around August 15, 2015

  • I've been asked by a higher authority to close this discussion.

  • Data entry and changing records is not the same as database administration.

Lee arranged hosting of the Alto al Crimen website via an web host in San Diego, California, just like Mark set up Rodny's new website on WildApricot's web host in Atlanta,Georgia.

    No difference.

The Alto al Crimen WordPress website was located on a secure server just as Rodny Direct is located on a secure server..)

    No difference.

Lee and Rodney managed basic record creation, modification and deletion on the AaC website.  Rodny and Mark do the same on the Wild Apricot servers, but that system also allows members to log in and edit their own information.

I have created e-mail lists, but did not ever extract personal information.

Lee was adamant the neither he nor I should have clear-text (spreadsheet) files on our laptops.  He was in charge of the website, and had access to the database and modifying records, but did not know how to extract data with this database, and did not want to learn.

The AaC Database since we ported it to the present server has never left that server or the dedicated backup servers provided by the web hosting company.  After the porting, all data not on the new server were deleted.  One of my qualifications to administer the database (not the same as data entry functions) was that I had worked in confidential positions as a contract senior network administrator in San Francisco with the Bank of America World HQ, Chevron Corporation HQ and Executive groups, Wells Fargo Business Banking Group, and the Pacific Stock Exchange.  I know what I am doing with respect to data integrity and security.

  • Not all running loose there has been success and apparently some arrests have been made,  But now is the time to support the local police and NP.  We have offered to donate some equipment.

  • There is another free communication service being set up now by several of the advanced neighborhood watch groups with the police. It will have a time saving instant link to the police, ect with identification signs per neighborhood and areas.  The information and contact is being sent to me now.  The speaker and organizer and a police representative will speak to our group in Santa Lucia, and others. More information to come.

It will be nice to have several options for getting help when we need it. Thanks to all that are working hard for us.

What a great pro-active community we have.

  • My animosity stems from the vendetta-style blindside attack on Alto al Crimen - a nasty and well-planned "coup".  When I received the e-mail announcement, I was working on a developing a new e-mail communication and followup program to patch up the holes that had developed in the old system.  I had no idea that a sophisticated coup was about to occur.

I believe that Mark could have approached AaC directly and probably negotiated an amicable transition, culminating in a civil joint announcement.  But instead, he chose the path of a public attempt to humiliate Alto al Crimen and its leaders - and that smacks of revenge.

Plus, he hid behind Rodny's name so that it would be difficult for anyone to call him out and avoid implicating Rodny - who is being "used" in this aspect of the hotline transition

Rodny, I am so sorry that you were "used" for a public vendetta, but I will sign up for your Rodny Direct Hotline when your AaC contract expires or is terminated.  You are great at what you do, and I support you completely.  You provide an invaluable service to this community, and I am proud to know you.

  • David: your comment that egos have been bruised, as well as the frustration expressed by several responses here point to some degree of dysfunction in the functioning of AAC.  As a community, Rodney has our universal support for the excellent service he has given.  I would hate to think that Rodney has not been given the respect he deserves by the AAC board.

    • But the transition could have been done in an amicable and friendly manner - instead it was done in a nasty and insidious coup fashion by an expat hiding behind Rodny's stellar reputation and using him as a shield.  It was an obvious attempt to humiliate people I know and respect - and it even included a couple of little jabs at Lee.

At least Mark could have waited until after Lee's memorial.  This announcement of the new hotline and its timing appear to not have been designed as a public service - for reasons I have mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

I don't know of a single person who would disparage Rodny.  Although I am not a board member, I have the utmost respect for Rodny, as do the board members I work with.

There will still be room for volunteers to work with the police and in promoting personal and home security and crime prevention - something that Rodny doesn't do.  But Rodny will still be the "go-to" guy in an emergency, and I fully support him in that role.

  • Fran, sorry to delay your answer - been busy.

Maybe I used slightly the wrong word - I was referring to the subscription service vs. the donation based AAC service. The service provided by Rodny's new subscription Rodny Direct service is and will be far superior to the database services currently provided by AAC. In that I am including communication, customer support, ease of management and security, etc.

  • Keith no argument here just confused as what we are suppose to do as a gesture for Lee Tuesday Night? Lee was very active in AAC.

For us I think we will contact the local police and donate something Lee and I spoke about to help the police and ambulance locate homes or process information for a fingerprint data base.

    • Great idea and you are very brave to put this comment out, but I agree with you totally 100%. You go girl!
