Does anyone have a confirmation on this? The fellow who is always at the counter there ( I have forgotten his name) was shot and killed this morning...large police presence when I went by earlier.

People in the interior of Panama are losing their innocence. Gang members and maleantes in Panama City are having to much competition and the police are behind their butts. They have found that people in the interior are well intentioned, naïve and innocent people that trust people so they have starting to move to towns and cities in the interior. For people in the interior not used to this type of crimes and violence this new situation is shocking, frightening and frustrating.
If the Police and authorities don't start doing something drastic I foresee that the innocence and patience of people of the small towns will end. Imagine a farmer with 4 hectares of private land that defend himself of maleantes from Panama City .... it will be hard to find someone there.
Thank god there was no shooting and it is understandable that information gets confused not only do we have the typical rumor mill, but a language barrier as well. An armed robbery in town is not good news for any of us.
With that said I had a conversation with a good bilingual Panamanian friend that backed up Roger's comments. She said that gangs are behind much of the robberies and violence. Also that more rapes are happening than reported. When I asked why women/girls are not reporting the horrific crime she explained that shame was brought to the family if reported.
Women/girls need to be more careful when traveling at night (in every country) as well as travel in a group, not alone. Do not pullover for anyone at night even if someone hits you in your car. Also do not fall for the baby on the side of the road or someone waving you over to help an injured child/person. Stay in your car keep driving and call the police. A premade sign in Spanish to police stating that you are going to drive to a well lit public place is not a bad idea if traveling alone at night if pulled over.
Interestingly enough, I just passed the Fletes Chavales truck heading southbound to David with the ghost of the clerk on board, smiling as always. He's no fool.
