Right. This thread is going in a boringly predictable downhill fashion. I'm not interested in debating the social and economic inequities of the world. I want a housekeeper who is reliable, honest and efficient. I am offering a very reasonable starting wage for where we live. I treat my employees well and provide many perks, as well as employee benefits AS REQUIRED BY LAW. If you have a recommendation, please private message me. I am closing this discussion.
An agreement over wages between two individuals is not the business of anyone else except the Ministry of Labor. Roughly 600,000 people in this country, or about 30% of the workforce, work casual jobs.

Trolls who post incorrect information not withstanding, the minimum wage for a housekeeper is about a $1.00 less than $2.50 an hour--in this area this is considered good for part time housekeeping. Social security is a non-issue for someone working 8 hours a week. That IS the law--not skirting the law. And if Dick Head wants to pay his maid $5 an hour and feed her lunch and give her rides, then good for him. Who cares?
The girl who did work for us was offered a full time position with the new Alcalde's administration as a secretary and we are glad for her. We just need a replacement.

Recently, a study was done which analyzed the cost of the basic food basket, minimum wage, and inflation. The study found that with the cost of the basic food basket standing at $288 in Panama, 80 percent of the salary of a person earning minimum wage in Panama would be spent on the basket.
