Below, I will give our community an account of what took place in the shooting of our dear neighbor. But 1st and foremost, I ask everyone to keep Richard & Barbara Moore in your prayers. They have endured a very difficult 24 hours to date.
I received permission from Barbara to post the details of this violent home invasion as well as an update on the condition of the Richard. Richard has been a valuable member of our Boquete community for many years. Richard has an excellent understanding of security as he was the liaison between Boquete Consulting Security and the Valle Escondido HOA as well as the “security consultant” that did home inspections for Alto el Crimen. Richard and Barbara recently moved from their home in Valle Escondido to their new home in Alto Quiel. They had just finished having security bars installed on this new home and were in the process of installing additional security enhancements.
My understanding was that around 10AM yesterday morning Richard was about to take a shower when heard something outside. When he went into the living room to investigate he saw three individuals on his rear porch area with a locked sliding glass door between them and Richard. The security gates for that door were not secured because it was in the day and the Moore's were using it to go in and out. When the three individuals saw Richard they fired what is believed to be a 45 caliber hand gun through the glass doors striking Richard in the back. It is believed that Richard either turned to flee when he saw the handgun or bent down trying to avoid being shot as the bullet entered is upper back and traveled to his lower back where it is still lodged. The perpetrators then shot Richard one more time shattering his ankle. They then entered through the broken glass where they proceeded to "force" Richard to tell them where the safe was. They then brought the safe to where Richard lie where he then opened it and they went through all his papers and got some cash. They then proceeded to ransack the house while Richard was tied up and lying face down with no clothes on, as he was about to enter the shower. Richard stated that two of the three perpetrators had on masks while the third was visible. They all seemed to be juveniles.
Fortunately his wonderful and loving wife came home a short while after and Richard was rushed to Chiriqui Hospital where he underwent over 5 hours of surgery to reconstruct his ankle. The bullet in his back remains lodged in its location and the doctors are monitoring it prior to making any decisions whether or not to remove it.
Both of the Moore's have gone through a horrific experience and Richard will be in the hospital for quite a while as he recovers.
As a security specialist in Chiriqui for over 5 years, I will be glad to take the time and offer proactive security and personal safety measures for all residents of our surrounding communities in an effort to prevent being victims of despicable acts like this. We must accept realities and work together to prevent something like this from ever happening again to any of our neighbors. The world is a dangerous place so let’s work together to help each other.

Hi David. A friend here sent me your posting and I forwarded it on to Barbara. I am sure they will be thrilled to know their friends in TX are joining us in prayer here for them both.
Kathy
God bless you both.
Thank you Carol for bringing the discussion back to Richard Moore. It seems he was forgotten in all the digression. Does anybody know how he is doing? Is someone taking care of Barbara? She must be traumatized and in need of TLC.
He got released from the hospital last Monday and is recovering. His spirits and humor were up even when he was in the hospital. We went to the hospital shortly after it happened and also the following day, but have been trying to give them some space to regroup and heal.

We only spent few weeks before moving here. We were influenced by some "well-meaning" individuals. On reflection we should have lived here for a month at least before making a final decision.
I agree with some other comments. You need to pack your bags tonight and catch the first flight out in the morning. You are far too vulnerable and naive to live here. Hasta Luego.
No Bill, Rachel is too good of a person to live in this hostile environment. It takes a crook to want to swim with crooks and she isn't made of that fabric. Good for you Rachel for maintaining your standards and principles! Enjoy first world where you can trust people again and have confidence in others.
