More and more organizations concerned with the very well-being of our modern civilization are beginning to come together to look at the problem of anthropological climate change and global warming.  This is an encouraging report.

For those interested in what is happening in Panama and the tropics, here is a LINK to a search for the phrase "climate change" in the past year at the website of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Center in Panama

Excerpts from the announcement:

The 500 Smithsonian scientists working around the world see the impact of a warming planet each day in the course of their diverse studies.  “What we realized at the Smithsonian is that many people think that climate change is just an environmental topic,” says John Kress, acting undersecretary of science at the Smithsonian. “It’s much more than that. Climate change will affect everything.”

Many scientists, including Smithsonian researchers, believe we have entered a new interval called the Anthropocene. Coined in the 1980s by Eugene F. Stoermer, a researcher in diatoms, but popularized by atmospheric chemist and Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen in 2000, the term is derived from the Greek words anthrop for man and cene for current or new. Unlike the Holocene, which began at the end of the last glaciation about 12,000 years ago, the Anthropocene has no formal start date. But in adopting the term, the Smithsonian recently organized its initiative “Living in the Anthropocene” to “expand climate change outside of just science and take Smithsonian resources to look at what other scholars and professionals are doing in various areas with regard to climate change,” Kress says.

As part of this initiative, the Smithsonian is bringing together some of the nation’s top critical thinkers to offer their perspectives in a symposium on October 9 called “Living in the Anthropocene: Prospects for Climate, Economics, Health, and Security.” The symposium features Rachel Kyte, group vice president and special envoy for climate change at the World Bank; James J. Hack, the director of the National Center for Computational Science at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory; George Luber, the associate director for climate change in the Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Effects at the National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Admiral Thad Allen, the executive vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton and former commander of the U.S. Coast Guard; and Thomas L. Friedman, a Pulitzer-winning columnist for the New York Times.

For economies to grow and prosper, especially in underdeveloped countries, the need to address climate change is crucial.

  • The Smithson International Truck Museum in beautiful PasKaPoo Park will be closed on Sundays during the winter.

The Ken Smithson collection of nineteen restored International pick-up trucks begins with the 1935 model and continues through to the 1974 model. The manufacturing of half-ton trucks was discontinued by the company in 1974.

International did not bring out a new model every year, which explains why the collection of nineteen vehicles, while complete, spans forty years.
Most of the nineteen are four speed, but a few of the early ones are three speed. All but two are stick shift. It is interesting to note that for the nineteen models of trucks, there are only three models of windshields. All Ken's International trucks are painted in authentic colours with Dupont paint. On the average, it took parts from five different trucks of each model to restore one of them.
The project began with the restoration of two of Ken's old gravel trucks, both International like the half tons, in 1980. The satisfaction that Ken derived from seeing these two in all their original splendor, led him to purchase a 1951 pick-up which he had owned many years before. He acquired this truck in 1981 and restored it to show-room perfection in 1982.

After that he never looked back, except back to the particular year of the vehicle with which he was involved in at any given time.
In 1990 the Rimbey Historical Society purchased the collection and constructed a building to house the trucks that is now called 'The Smithson International Truck Museum' and is the most complete collection of International 1/2 ton Trucks in the world. Also in the collection is a 1957 Anniversary Edition that the Town of Rimbey purchased, refinished and donated to the Museum in 2002, for the Town's 100th Anniversary.

    • I think some one is throwing a tantrum.
    • Welcome to the Forum- Men without lives.

I predict Keith's post will not go viral.

I grew up on a farm. International's were like the Rambler of pickups. No frills. Don't need no stinkin power steering. Definitely for the unenlightened consumer.

      • Then the Tractor Museum at PasKaPoo would be right up your furrow.

        Historic Tractor Museum

In 2009 construction was completed on the Historic Tractor Museum which is located North and East of the Smithson International Truck Museum.

It is now home to a variety of vintage tractors donated by local farmers surrounding the Rimbey area as well as some Town’s People. These have been restored through many hours of volunteer help.

On display in this building are Case, Allis Chalmers, John Deere, McCormick Deering, Cockshutt, and Hart Par. Notice, that on the above shelves we have collected and assembled several artifacts relating to farming and homesteading reminiscent of the early 1900’s.
