Is there an such agency that customers can file a complaint against Union Fenosa? In the past month our power has gone out over 40 times, sometimes just a bleep other times for 1hour to 12. I have heard from Panamanians that the company is trying to get a rate hike , 3rd world style and that the outages are intentional .I would say a 50% discount is more appropriate. Just a thought , an intellegent approach would be excellent service justifies a rate hike. This is getting old........

I bit my hand/tongue/mouse LOL when I saw this post the other day.
No longer have the time to explain what we have been through - maybe if you do a search on me or this subject, you’ll get an idea of what more than most have been through!
Buen suerte!
Val, I can't imagine why Union Fenosa/gasNatural/Naturgy would be having problems.
LOL. I am just happy they have decided to leave us alone. Very happy with our $130/mo. Power bill. Up $10 bucks from last month! outrage - not.
We used to just “roll the dice”. Could be $400, one time $700 ( think that was the worst), then a few minimum bills for the Pensionado discount - 600kwh I believe?
Did I try to fight them? Of course and several times!! ASEP at the time was ZERO help but they may be better now.
Agree 100% with the incredible power outages recently. We paid for a full property generator and finally found the right guy that knew what he was doing - this is a plug for you Sparky!
Now that our generator automatically turns on (ATS) after power is out from UF, no complaints.
But to get to this point? We had to replace THREE of these at $700 - we must have been an experiment with the last guys so it sat there for a couple years since all I could think of .. how long is this one going to last??
Then on top of the absurd bills we used to receive, being the “pioneers”, we were, we had to pay Union Fenosa 1/4 of the cost for a new transformer that all the neighbors after us enjoy as well.
And I wonder why we used to have money- LOL. Obviously this is just one issue. We’re here and have survived it all..
I guess the expression “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” applies here!
On to do what I loggged in to do post a classified for an IT expert!
Speaking of power outages, the power is out here now still and initially went out at about 3pm yesterday in a lightening storm.......Tried calling the 315 complaint number but only get a recording....There are outages virtually every day.....sometimes 2 or 3 times a day......I was traveling in Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru a few months ago and as far as I know did not experience one single outage.......In Nicaragua, all the time...If you dont have a backup generator in SJDS you are out of business......Panama is more on the level of Nicaragua, Fenosa runs the show in both countries.....They are terrible.........and expensive......The cost pkh is approx double what it is in the U.S.
Alan, to get a live person call 800-8346. When you hear the recording, hit 0. That will bypass the recording and take you to a live person. Have your bill ready, because they will ask you for the NIS number.
Tell them where you are, then they will ask you a lot of other irrelevant information that they should already have by having your NIS. They will give you a report number in case you need to call again. It is worth calling, because sometimes they don't know there is an outage unless they hear from someone, especially if the outage is just in one neighborhood.
Is there an English speaker on the other end, Judy?
No, Spanish only. I got an English speaker a couple of times, but that is rare.
ETESA used to be 100% State owned. Now I believe that the powerful Motta family, owner of COPA (51%) has purchased approx 50% of ETESA........If my memory serves which is questionable at times......Its either in the works or a done deal........

Good info Jim and Keith. Thank you.
I'd still like to know more about electrical generation (rates and private vs public) in Latin America, just to compare it to Panama. I just don't have the time to research it.
Also any comments as far as rate differentials in different locations in Panama. Do small towns pay the same rate/Kwhr, as Panama City?
