Would appreciate information from those who have water purification systems on which would be the best to purchase, whether it is installed or portable........

- Get a settling tank if you have incoming muck. For thousands of years, humans have used cisterns to purify their water. Filters are just bacterial breeding beds. When we first arrived, I did extensive research on purification. 97% of bacterial are eliminated by a settling tank. A good six inch layer of muck at the bottom is key to its function of trapping bacteria.
- Get over it - Suppose your water is indeed pristine and pure, tested to the Nth. Every breath you take, every thing you eat, every time you pick your nose, you are ingesting billions of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Our bodies contain ten times more bacterial cells then human cells. We are just the bus that takes the bacteria to Disneyland. :)
Our immune systems are run by the bacteria in our gut, which for many people have been decimated by antibiotics. If your immune system is healthy, none of the bacteria, fungi or viruses in the water will bother you. Martine and I have traveled the world for 30 years, drinking the water, eating the lettuce and not caring a bit. Neither of us have every been sick for even a day. Oh yes, we avoid antibiotics like the plague.
Very informative comments, thanks all for your information, we are now in a better position to determine what we need in a water purification system......
The Berkey water filter is a gravity fed system. It requires no electricity and will filter everything except sea water. Parasites, bacteria, chemicals sediment slug.....and does not change the mineral content of the water. Please visit Berkeyfilters.com to read more about these outstanding machines. There is zero maintenance. The filters will never stop filtering water although the process may slow down in time ( a year or more) and you would only have to take them out, scrub them with a clean scrubby and out them back in. The Peace Corp, the Red Cross and NASA all use the Berkey Filters. I emailed you to let you know that I am at the Tuesday morning market. Currently I am out of stock but should receive the Bigs in about a week. Please come visit me and we can talk more.
Like Fran, I had bacteria in my water after upgrading to a larger UV light system so I installed the Doulton Rio 2000 which uses ceramic filters like in the counter top Berkey units. This is a whole house treatment option so that the water is clean even in the showers. The Rio 2000 filters at .9 microns and with the dirty water we get, I have to clean them once per week. I'm working on better pre-filtering but this is the only chemical free option I know of so I put up with the maintenance.

Kevin,
I have a single under sink Doulton ceramic filter for my drinking water and I think this system might be a good whole house solution for me, since I rent. Did you purchase just the filter or the whole shebang? They advertise the 6 candle filter as being compatible with most 10" housings - something I already have between my tank and my house.
The Rio 2000 fits in a large 10in housing, generically called a Big Blue housing. I have two in parallel for better flow rate for whole house usage. I have a pre-filter in front of each one and have not solved the problem of them clogging once per week. I am experimenting with different filters for this because the Doulton's clog easily filtering at .9 micron. Here's a link to the BB Housing.

I know this is not going to be satisfying, but:

I told you this is not what you wanted to hear.
Mark,
What about the larger things like parasites?

Recommend comprehensive testing of supply water quality and condition to determine treatment protocols.
