Don't give the U.S. post office a forwarding address, and you won't get most of that junk mail. The U.S. p.o. won't forward mail to Panama anyway. If I do get junk, I email whoever sent it (credit cards, etc.) and tell them to stop it, and they do. I have rarely received junk mail here.
Regarding Airbox, I use Miami Express (Uno) that is next to the Airbox office. When I went to pick up my mail, the Airbox office was empty. Did they move somewhere else?
Judy, Yes, they moved just around the corner, where the dress shop and gift shop was located. Facing the old Airbox office, go right, turn left at the corner. At least this is where I have been told that it has moved to. I have not been there yet. But I had been in that shop. Wish I could find where the shop moved to, it was so cute.
i use mailboxes etc. here. we lived in p city prior to boquete for 9 months and had panamania postal service. it worked basically the same, only much cheaper ($30 a month here for MBE, it was $30 a year for a box in p city) you had to go to the post office and sign up for a box. the one here is probably the same, it is located across from the parque in the palacio municipal. check it out! we received a box, a key, and always got our mail, to the best of my knowledge.

People and companies in Panama usually have Post Office Box at their nearest Postal Office or Correos Nacionales.
Postal system in Panama is the worst in the world. Extremely bureaucratic, obsolete with a strong union of lazy employees that says NO everytime government says they will make some changes in the institution to improve the service and make the postal system better. We dont have a good address nomenclature system and no ZIP Code system in the country and that means there are not Postmen delivering mail to people directly to their home, offices, etc.
What some people in Panama have done is to rent a PO BOX and depending on the mail volume you planned to received you go every week or every two weeks to the Postal Office and check your PO Box. I do really think it is the safest, quickest and cheapest way to receive you mail in Panama through the Postal System. A Personal PO Box will cost you between $20 - $30 a year but..... the problem is that they are not so much and you should wait until one is available. I usually pay this fee in February because if you fail to renew your contract your PO BOX will be placed available for anyone who were looking for one.
Through my PO BOX I have received from US magazines, books, products samples from the companies I work with and any other stuff they sent me by regular mail.

Good idea. That may thin if our some, but we need to stop it, as we are not returning.
Has anyone compared this to using airbox? Also, how do you go about not having to pay for 20lbs of junk mail from the states.

Airbox moved next door to the Western Union - Ediche Office, across the street from the Big Catholic Church.
